Europe is literally overflowing with worthy holiday destinations, but only a handful stand ahead of the pack in terms of beauty, culture, and variety of attractions. The Canary Islands not only claim some of the most breathtakingly beautiful spots in the world, they also play host to a rich cultural tradition that lends itself to the bevy of attractions awaiting tourists of all ages. Most famous amongst the travel community for their pristine beaches, the islands that comprise the Canary chain emit a vibe that is every bit as tropical as it is Spanish. Hence, a number of resort districts, public beaches, and water sports await if you should decide to make one of the islands your next holiday destination.

The Canary Islands are an archipelago consisting of ten islands that are off the coast of Africa but belonging to Spain. Three of these – Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura – are international tourist hubs that annually attract millions of visitors. Tourism, therefore, represents a large component of the islands’ economy. Travelers flock here for many reasons, including the tropical scenery and climate and the proximity to Western Europe.

The islands were formed millions of years ago from volcanic activity from the Canary hotspot volcano beneath the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The landscapes that result from this are rugged, mountainous, and unique.

The total Canarian population of native inhabitants hovers around 2,000,000. Most of those who live on the islands are Spanish, but a recent wave of immigration has brought numbers of Portuguese, Italians, and Britons. The culture and architecture throughout the archipelago is decidedly Spanish in flavor, and you’ll encounter examples of this as you shop, dine, and socialize. Culture is only a small reason why the Canary Islands have become one of the leading tourist destinations in the world, and should you choose to give it a try, you’ll be sure to experience the holiday of a lifetime.
