Where to Surf on Fuerteventura

Like Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is becoming very popular with surfers and there are many spots around the island which must be tried. The best time of year to visit is during the autumn and winter months, which are not much colder than in the summer, when the Atlantic swells are higher.

The north and north-west coast has a number of areas which are ideal for surfers of all abilities. There are plenty of places there for those who are more experienced and are looking for adventure. It is also not an expensive place for surfers to visit, although the area is usually very quiet at that time of year. The sea is rarely flat there although there are strong winds which can be a little unpredictable. Surfers sticking to the north coast should remain in the area around the ‘North Track’ which begins at Corralejo and runs to El Cotillo. Some parts of the area are very remote and not great for tourist activities.

Some of the best surfing areas include Generosa which is ideal for those seeking high tides, but at other times is ideal for intermediate surfers. Another area is ominously named Suicides which is close to Mejillonas. It is not often surfed as it is too unpredictable. There are other spots at Mejillonas which picks up more surf than other areas in the north of the island.

During the spring and summer months there is less consistency in the surf but those who visit the east coast will find that there are still surfing opportunities there.
