Why Are the Canary Islands So Popular?

The Spanish territory of The Canary Islands, located off the west coast of Africa, have long been a favourite holiday destination for tourists from around the world, particularly tourists from the UK, but what is it that makes them so popular? It may seem like a simple question to answer; sun, sea, sand (sangria for many) but is there more to it?

The main point which keeps the number of visitors well in excess of 10 million annually is that throughout these beautiful islands there really is something for everyone; whatever type of holiday you prefer you are sure to find it  somewhere in the Canaries.

Fuerteventura is a water sport enthusiast’s paradise, which is easy to understand when you find out that the islands name roughly translates to “strong winds”.  The miles of golden beaches are often open to breezes that windsurfers, sailors, and general adrenaline junkies alike thrive on. Do not assume it is a wild coastline, the cooling effect of the winds make it an ideal location for family holidays, with many resorts catering for such custom. The island generally has a more laid back feel compared to its livelier relatives and does not have the wilder reputation of Tenerife or even Gran Canaria, but one thing is for sure its beauty is incomparable..

A dream holiday destination for millions of tourists every year, Tenerife holidays really do have it all; mega resorts with every facility you could ever need, stunning coastline, beautiful countryside and on the whole friendly, welcoming locals. The biggest and best known of the Atlantic Archipelago has more to offer than just the party capital Playa de Las Americas, which admittedly does have its good points. Mile up on mile of beaches, forest areas, volcanic and mountain areas, and best of all a taste of Canary culture once you escape the mega resorts. These are the reasons why it is seriously worthwhile exploring the islands and making the most your time there.

Add to this the allure of Gran Canaria and its wide variety of natural beauty which must be explored and you have the most popular summer tourist areas in Europe. Whilst it may appear to some that these islands have lost touch with their past it is tourism that resurrected them from being the forgotten arm of Spain and one the poorest regions. Tourism is important, and resorts have been developed to cater for the needs of the masses, like those unbeatable hotels in Tenerife, but if you want more from your summer getaway then you really don’t have to dig very deep to be impressed. It’s no coincidence that thousands return year upon year.
